I saw the Butt Hole Surfers play at Kanes on Oct. 13, 2009. This is a band that has been around forever. I use to hear them play in surf videos when I was growing up. I had never seen them before this night. They are a surf rock/punk band. You could tell that they had been playing together for a long time because they sounded really tight and didn’t miss a beat. They had a huge following of middle aged people along with mixed younger crowd. I felt like I was back in high school watching my favorite surf video again. When I was younger I think that I liked that type of music a lot more. I don’t really care for Punk music anymore. It seems like a lot of noise and not much music. It was a good time overall. I would say see the band if you are familiar with the surf community. Other than that it wouldn’t be something high on my list.

Art Event #5: Butt Hole Surfers
December 16, 2009Art Event #4: Minna Gallery, San Francisco
December 16, 2009I was walking down the streets of San Francisco with my girlfriend and we stumbled across an amazing jazz/blues band playing. We walked in the building and we noticed the room was filled with amazing artwork. It turned out that we had walked in a major event and art showing at the Minna Gallery. It had free food and and full bar. The show was featuring local artists whom I had never heard of. The featured artists were Derek Albeck, David Choong Lee, Eric Bailey, French, Brent Harada, Hiro Kurata, Travis Hillard, Tommii Lim, Luke Ramsey, Hannah Stouffer and Marco Zamora. This was the best showing of local art that I had ever seen. There were all sorts of mediums: paint, pen, pencil, spray paint and cloth. This type of art I would actually buy if I had the money. We felt privileged to be apart of the event and it was one of the highlights of our trip.
Art Event #3: Diego Roots
December 16, 2009I saw Diego Roots play on Sept. 12, 2009 at Kanes in Mission Beach. I have known the members of this group for a long time. The type of music they play is reggae. It was a great show. A lot of my friends were in attendance. Kanes is a great place to listen to music. Its close to my house which makes it really easy to get to and I know a ton of people in the area. The vocals, guitarist and drummer of Diego Roots are amazing. They are super tight and sound really clean. I would recommend anyone who hasn’t seen Diego Roots to see a show. Its a really fun and upbeat experience.
Art Event #2: Mower/Slower Concert
December 16, 2009I went to see Mower/Slower on Oct. 28, 2009 at the 710 Club in Pacific Beach. This is my friends band. I used there name for my Genre Gig Poster. The music they play is heavy/hard core metal along with their alter ego band Slower which is all the same music converted to jazz and lounge. The jazz and lounge music is my favorite. I don’t care to much for the heavy stuff. My favorite part of the show is the stand up bass that my friend Chris plays. It really gives a different feel to the band when you’re watching him play this massive instrument. The show went really well and it was a huge turn out with all of our friends in attendance.
Art Event #1: Museum of Modern Art
December 16, 2009I took a trip up to San Francisco with my girlfriend. We went to the Museum of Modern art on Oct. 24, 2009. It was amazing to see all of the artists that I have studied during my education at Cal State San Marcos. I have taken many art classes and we were always looking at slides on the overhead projector. I knew that there was some resolution lost, but I had no I idea just how much better the real works looked in person. I like how the painters Salvador Dali and Diego Rivera utilized light in their paintings. The techniques of shading and light are amazing. The only thing that I didn’t like about the museum is that is so huge that it is hard the really appreciate every piece of art. After a while my mind starts to fade out and I can’t really focus on the quality of the artists presented. I didn’t like some of the installation art as well. A lot of it looks to simple and weird.
